Why am I not getting texts anymore?
If your community has gone quiet on your phone, the most common cause is that you replied STOP (or one of the related keywords) to a text at some point — maybe weeks or months ago. That tells your phone carrier to block all future SMS from that community’s number, and we can’t override it.
The good news: only SMS is paused. Your conversations on the advocate site still work, and you can resume texts in one reply.
How to resume texts
Find the last text you got from the community (it’ll be from a 10-digit phone number, not a short code). Reply to that number with one of:
- START
- YES
- UNSTOP
Any of those three will re-enable SMS. You should start getting messages again within a minute.
What’s still working while you’re paused
- The advocate site. Sign in and you’ll see every conversation.
- Messages a prospect sent while you were paused. Nothing was deleted. They’re all saved on the site.
- Replying via the site. You can keep the conversation going through the advocate site even with SMS paused.
- Email (where the community has it configured). Email is its own channel and isn’t affected by an SMS STOP.
Which words paused things in the first place?
These are the keywords your carrier treats as SMS opt-outs. Sending any of them — even by accident — pauses texts:
- STOP
- STOPALL
- UNSUBSCRIBE
- CANCEL
- END
- QUIT
The match is whole-message and case-insensitive, so “stop” and “STOP.” both count, but “please stop messaging me” does not.
What happens after you resume
- Texts start flowing again right away. No waiting period.
- Your conversations are intact. Nothing was deleted while you were paused. Any messages a prospect sent during that time are still on the advocate site.
- You can pause again anytime. Reply STOP and the same thing happens.
Still stuck?
If you tried START and texts still aren’t coming through, your carrier may have a longer cooldown, or the community’s number may have changed. Reach out to your community and they can confirm you’re flagged as opted back in on their end.
